The Shoe Story

Co-created, designed and written by Oliver James Hymans and Liat Rosenthal

Developed at Nottingham’s New Theatre, performed at Sweet Venue for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005.

The Shoe Story is an original and contemporary piece of theatre for families and young audiences structured as a triptych of cautionary stories all with one thing in common: shoes! The three tales involve a naughty boy who can’t tie his own shoe laces and ends up in a big knot; an evil queen with the world’s largest collection of shoes who refuses to share her wealth; and finally the little birdie-boy, born with the feet of a bird who struggles to find a pair of shoes to fit him.

The performance played for the duration of the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and incorporated Oliver’s visual style of performance, with the use of the body, expression and performer’s voice to create much of the scenography. Oliver’s design elements created a fantastical land which a darker edge to entertain both parents and younger audiences alike.
